What should I do as a PP Supervisor?

According to the 2021 MYP Personal Project Guide, the role of the supervisor is to support the student throughout the personal project, assisting students and participating in the assessment process. .

How to support students?

Ethical and Responsible Project Selection

Support students in selecting appropriate MYP Personal Project topics that align with legal and ethical standards. This includes ensuring considerations for health and safety, human rights, confidentiality, animal welfare, and environmental impact are met. This guidance should encourages responsible decision-making and meaningful project development.

Structured Support and Process Guidance

Provide students with comprehensive guidance throughout the project. This includes project guidelines, a timeline with deadlines, and the assessment criteria. Supervisors must advise students on, curating evidence of their work, and understanding the significance of personal analysis and reflection, all while promoting academic honesty.

Assessment, Feedback, and Standardization

Supervisors give formative feedback, ensure academic integrity, and verify the authenticity of each project. They assess student work using the official MYP criteria, participate in standardization procedures, and report final assessment totals to the MYP coordinator for submission to the IBIS, ensuring a consistent and fair evaluation process.

Effective Time Management and Supervision Strategies for the Personal Project

Since the Personal Project is developed alongside students’ regular classes and activities, finding time for consistent guidance can be challenging. Therefore, it is highly recommended that schools allocate dedicated time for project development and supervision.

As a supervisor, ensure that students adhere to the project timeline by scheduling regular check-ins, ideally weekly or at least twice a month. These meetings help students stay on track and provide opportunities to set clear, achievable goals. Encourage students to come to each meeting with a specific milestone or piece of work completed.

To support the writing process, ask students to submit sections of their report progressively. This not only helps prevent last-minute work but also ensures that much of the writing is completed well before the final deadline. For some students, this structured approach is essential to staying organized and meeting expectations.
